Five Ways To Help With Infertility And Depression

Research studies prove that there is a correlation between infertility and depression.  Stress that is derived from depression or anxiety can alter your immune function similar to how a lower immunity makes you more vulnerable to viruses and colds when you are emotionally stressed and tired.  Knowing this, it should come as no surprise that if your immune system is suppressed it can adversely affect your ability to conceive.

Psychological stress can affect your ability to get pregnant by inhibiting the hypothalamus that help to regulate your hormone levels.  Additionally, if there is an over-activation of the hypothalamus, the adrenal and pituitary responses are also changed.  The pituitary actually regulates the amount of hormones that are made as well as the volume that is released into your body.  When this is altered, there are substantial effects on hormonal balances that are necessary for ovulation, fertilization and tubal functioning.

It is proven that infertility and depression are definitely linked but can they be prevented?  Unfortunately, once a woman becomes depressed that she has not been successful at getting pregnant, which is usually within two years of trying, it can often take hormone levels six years to get back to normal.  This is a reason why so many women get pregnant when they stop trying because they are no longer stressed out and depressed about it.  Luckily, researchers have developed ways of dealing with a non-pregnant woman before she gets to this depressed state.

Increase Your Fertility Chances

Infertility and depression do not have to ruin your chances of getting pregnant.  Do not get discouraged!  Instead, consider these helpful suggestions to help you conceive, whether you are depressed or not

  1. Allow yourself to express your emotions.  In order to achieve deep relaxation, you are required to release your feelings. Acknowledge your grief, anger, fear and disappointment and share your infertility and depression feelings with someone who can understand what you are going through and possibly relate.  Do not be afraid to verbalize your anger or cry if you are disappointed.  When you release your feelings, you allow yourself to feel hopeful later rather than hopeless.
  1. Take the time to practice relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga and visualization. These increase your body's ability to achieve a natural balance.  Find yourself a daily activity to participate in that helps to calm your mind.  Another good way to deal with infertility and depression is with body-centered hypnosis.  This uses imagery for infertility and childbirth.  Visualization hypnotic effects, paired up with relaxation creates a powerful technique to effectively communicate with the portion of your brain that helps to balance hormonal activity in your body.
  1. Write your feelings down in a journal.  Focus on releasing all of your disappointment as you continue on towards your goal.  Acknowledge your feelings but do not project them toward the future.  Do not think that you can't get pregnant, rather focus on the fact that you are trying to do everything that you can to conceive and stay positive.
  1. Seek out the support that you need.  Your inability to get pregnant may stir up some surprising emotions that you are not prepared for.  It is quite common to feel inadequate which hurts your self-esteem and relationship.  Do not let your infertility and depression feelings overwhelm you. Get the support that you really need from friends, family and professionals.  Sharing feelings will help you work through feeling alone or discouraged.
  1. Get yourself help with infertility treatments.  It may help you conceive and also prevent worsened depression.  It is important that you treat your depression now before you throw your hormones too out of balance.
